Manzanita, OR ( PressReleaseCollection ) January 22, 2009 -- A funny thing happened on the way to launching the website FunnyClips.com. The programmer who built the software that allowed users to post their funny videos on the site simply vanished.

FunnyClips owner Ted Anderson, founder of Crowdmaster, Inc., said, “Beta testing was going well, until the programmer stopped returning phone calls and left no forwarding address. That was $315,000 down the drain".

"Our business model for FunnyClips was to share advertising revenue with content creators who posted on our site," Anderson says. “We knew that would attract quality videos, giving us a leg up on FunnyOrDie.com, MyDamnChannel.com and YouTube.”

Given the current economy, Anderson is putting FunnyClips.com up for sale. It will be featured in a global online auction January 27-30 – Moniker’s DOMAINfest Global, available at http://marketplacepro.moniker.com/auction/detail.html?auction_id=197

“Based on the still-robust market for commercially viable Internet domains,” Anderson says, “FunnyClips should sell for more than a million dollars.”

Recent domain sales include Fund.com at $9,999,950; Answers.Travel for $3.3 million; DataRecovery.com at $1,659,000; and FinancialAid.com for $800,000.

"Sometimes the purchase price alone can create significant public awareness for a website. It certainly did in the case of Answers.Travel,“ Anderson said. “Domain value increases with site visits.”

“While nearly every sector of the economy is suffering,” Anderson notes, “the buying and selling of web domains continues to make a lot of savvy wordsmiths rich. Considering that a domain can be created and registered for as little as $10 at sites like MyDomain.com, the return-on-investment (ROI) in domaineering is extraordinary, and within everyone’s reach.”

Anderson's advice for other startups: "Always get a copy of the source code from your programmer...and test it. Even if it’s built on an open platform like MySQL, make sure that your work-for-hire agreement gives you ownership of that code."

Crowdmaster, Inc.'s other ventures involve real estate, venture capital and aerial advertising.
