Thankfully, there are things you can do to dramatically reduce the likelihood of becoming the next identity theft scam victim. The first step is to become educated on how identity thieves obtain personal information in the first place.

According to an FTC report released in February of this year, the number of identity theft complaints in 2008 was 10 times the number received just 8 years earlier in 2000. Separately, the Javelin Strategy and Research Center’s 2009 Identity Theft Study shows that “Identity theft is on the rise, affecting almost 10 million victims in 2008 (a 22% increase from 2007).” Keep in mind, these numbers are based solely on reported incidents of identity theft, so the actual totals may be higher.
