Remington College Partners with Sickle Cell Disease Association for 2010 Blood Drives

Heathrow, Fla, ( Pressreleasecollection ) March 11, 2010 - Remington College and the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America are partnering for a series of blood drives to be held at Remington College campuses across the country throughout the year. The program is called “3 Lives” - because three lives may be saved for every one pint of blood donated. <br /><br />“Our goal is to collect hundreds of pints of blood that will help out hospitals and blood centers in the communities where we have campuses,” said Jack Forrest, Remington College President and CEO. <br /><br />The blood drives will focus on the need for minority donors – especially African Americans.<br /><br />More than 70,000 people in the U.S. have sickle cell disease – and about 1,000 babies are born with the disease each year. According to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA), African American blood donors are crucial in the fight against sickle cell.<br /><br />“Many people with sickle cell disease require frequent blood transfusions, and it’s best for them to receive blood that closely matches their own,” said Elizabeth Simpson, Interim President/COO for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. “African American donors provide blood with unique antigens that is vital for people with sickle cell disease.” <br /><br />Each Remington College campus will hold three blood drives in 2010. The first ones will happen in mid-April as part of National Minority Health Month.
