Edinburgh, UK, 1 March 2008 ( Pressreleasecollection ) -- Upgrading the interior of a bathroom can add thousands of pounds to the resale value of a property, according to a study into the correlation between interior design and house prices published by industry watchdog ebathroom.net.

According to the report, a new, contemporary bathroom can increase the value of a property by 3%, and the majority of properties selling beyond the local ceiling price contain contemporary, minimalist bathroom designs.

The news will be particularly appealing to the buy-to-let market and the property development business, which will naturally benefit from the growing trend towards buying on the basis of bathroom design.

Steven Tomlin of ebathroom.net, however, said that the findings were nothing new and simply reinforced the traditional wisdom that bathrooms and kitchens increased home value.

"The findings simply reiterate what property professionals already understand - buyers are attracted to interior design, specifically in the bathroom and kitchen areas. By investing time and money into bathroom design, homeowners and investors alike can expect to increase their return over the shortest period of time to realise a profit on the sale of their home."

Of the most profitable interior design styles, the study found contemporary minimalism to be the style of choice for increasing property resale value.
